I don’t know anything specifically about Carnival layoffs, but I can guess some ways in which they have lost the need for workers.
Computerization is the main one. Computers can do many routine tasks that people did years ago. For instance, at some point they probably had people recording bookings by hand. Now, people can book online and all you need is a few people taking care of the website. They probably had telephone operators at one point, if they have been around that long.
